Accident Case Study - What You Should Do!
Accident
Case Study - What you should do.
The case study information below was
reported by one of our patients.
Ø He was hit
by a drunk driver who was speeding and fled the scene of the accident.
Ø His injury
report stated he hit his head, kept repeating himself, calling things by their wrong
name. He was disoriented, stressed and
numb.
Ø “I refused
to go to the hospital or Doctor because I had no medical insurance.”
What he should
have done.
1. Help
everyone to a safe place. Assist the
injured.
2. Call 911. Request police, medical and fire
assistance as necessary.
3. For minor
accidents and no serious injuries, move cars to the side of the road and out of
the way of traffic. Turn on your hazard lights and put out markers and flares
as appropriate.
4. Do not
discuss the accident with anyone but police. If you are criticized or threatened write down what is said but do not
respond, or argue or provide information.
5. Get photographs of vehicles and other objects involved. The first picture should be of the other car’s
license plate. Include skid marks, if
any, and full views of the scene. Use
the best camera available, cell phone
pictures are better than no pictures at all.
6. Exchange
information with all drivers involved in the accident. Note the following information: a. Name and address, driver’s license number
b. Phone numbers of home, work and cell c. Insurance Company and policy numbers
d. Description of each car: license
plate numbers, year, make and color.
7. Get names,
addresses and phone numbers of all witnesses.
8. Write down everything the others involved in the accident say
about it and everything you can remember as soon as you can.
9. Seek medical attention that day or the next day. Call
Weimer Chiropractic at 549-9987 and describe your symptoms and the best
time to get an exam. We can usually get you in the same day. Some
injuries may be hidden for weeks. Symptoms can be muscle stiffness, spasms, neck pain, headache,
numbness and tingling, mid-and low back pain, and any discomfort or difficulty. The trauma and/or confusion of an accident
may postpone pain signals for hours or even days.
10. The lesson
from this case is that collecting
information and getting an exam from a Doctor is vital in maintaining
your health, wellness and your ability to live and work. No one can remember all the details but everyone can pre-plan a few important
steps.
